The safer city campaign for Kampala City Launched!

Following the baseline survey on “Peace and Security in Kampala City,” Centre for Economic Social Cultural Rights in Africa (CESCRA) in partnership with International, KACITA-Uganda together with Open Spaces and Action for Fundamental Change and Development (AFFCAD) launched a Safer City Campaign for Kampala Metropolitan City. This initiative aimed at involving the role of the businesses community, residents, city officials, security and law enforcement in Kampala City in the efforts to reduce crime, violence and conflicts and build a collaborative partnership to sustain awareness on maintaining mechanisms for ensuring peace and security in Kampala City.

Main activities during the safe city campaign included the following;

    1. Press conference to introduce the safer City Campaign activities to the general public. Key stakeholders of the safe city campaign introduced the initiative to over 20 media houses covering Radio, TV and print media. Speakers included Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Uganda police force UPF), Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA- Uganda), International Alert Centre for Economic Social Cultural Rights in Africa (CESRA) together with Action for Fundamental Change and development (AFFCAD) and open Space
    2. Media awareness on the safer City Campaign: This included television and radio talk shows and radio announcements on local media channels.
    3. Launching the safer City Campaign and flag off of the mobile Truck for the open space public dialogues. The campaign was officially launched by Mr. commissioner Harunah Isabirye who represented the inspector general of police General kale Kaihura. The truck covered five divisions of Kawempe, Rubaga, Nakawa, Makindye and Kampala central division.
    4. Mobile truck Open Space Dialogues. As the mobile truck moved to designated places aided by music entertainers, dialogues were conducted between the participants and selected speakers from CSOs, KACITA-Uganda and government officials. Some of the areas covered included Old taxi park ground, Kikuubo business centre, Kisseka market, Nakulabye market, Wandegeya market, bwaise market and Nakawa market.
    5. Corporate Dinner Night at Grand Imperial of Hotel of key business community, manufacturers, investors, landlords and targeted and invited public officials. CESCRA presented the summary highlights of the baseline survey report on Peace and Security in Kampala City.

NOTE: The above mentioned activities were launched to flag off a continuous long term campaign in Kampala city, and latter to other parts of the country
